Maize Flour Prices Steadily Hiking  The cost of maize flour in Kisii has continued to rise despite the government’s assurance that they will release maize to millers to help stabilize the prices. A spot check by KNA in different stores and supermarkets across Kisii town revealed that the price of a two-kilogram packet of maize flour was retailing at an average of Sh. 165 to Sh. 200, up from Sh. 100 to Sh. 150 between January and mid-April this year. For instance, at Quick Mart supermarket, a two-kilogram packet of Hostess maize flour is retailing at Sh. 184 while that of Amara is being sold at Sh. 187. At the neighbouring Naivas supermarket, a two-kilogram packet of Hostess maize flour is retailing at Sh. 190, Ajab at Sh. 165, and Raha at Sh. 209. At Guardmart supermarket, a two-kilogram packet of Jogoo maize flour is being sold at Sh. 165, Soko at Sh. 167 and Amaize is retailing at Sh. 208. GUSII INITIATION CEREMONY The Gusii, a Bantu-speaking people, live in the Nyanza Province of Kenya. There were ceremonies performed in Kisii which were the rite of passage and all of them marked an important part. Initiation ceremonies being one of the ceremony it showed the transition from childhood to adulthood, that is, culminating with circumcision for boys at around the age of 12years and clitoridectomy for girls at the age of 8-9years. The ceremonies occurred annually just after the harvest and lasted from October to December but circumcision for girls was done before that of boys.The Gusii have the highest proportion of circumcised women in any Kenyan society with an estimated 97%of adult women having undergone the operation.For the girls, they wore a beaded chain called “Egetinti” on their ceremony which was used in rites to make an imaginary animal Called “Enyamweri” where girls acquired maiden names.During the initiation the girls going to be initiated would wake up her moth...
